The administration of
the Applied Mathematics Laboratory (AML) is the responsibility of the Department
of Mathematics in the College of Science and Mathematics. There are
three groups who are concerned with the operational details of the Applied
Mathematics Laboratory; they are the Department of Mathematics, the Applied
Mathematics Laboratory Director, and the Applied Mathematics Laboratory
Committee.
Applied Mathematics Laboratory Director
The Chairperson of the Department of Mathematics shall
appoint the Director of the Applied Mathematics Laboratory. Faculty should be appointed
for three year terms which may be renewed. The duties of the director are:
to contact prospective sponsors and to determine the suitability of
projects for AML;
to choose team directors and to facilitate the communication between
team directors and sponsoring organizations;
to revise, if necessary, and to grant approval of each project in
consultation with the team directors prior to contractual agreement;
to recruit a suitable team of students for each project;
to report to the Applied Mathematics Laboratory Committee (described below);
to supervise the creation of contractual and financial agreements
with University staff and the sponsor;
to have representatives in attendance at the oral presentation of
each team at the middle and end of each semester;
to receive the interim and final written reports of each team as
allowed under the contract with the sponsor;
to review each project at the end of each semester with a written
report and evaluation to be submitted to the Department of Mathematics and
to the Applied Mathematics Laboratory Committee by January 31 and June 30 of each year;
to purchase books, supplies and equipment from operating funds;
to maintain the Applied Mathematics Laboratory Seminar Room and its
equipment;
to provide secretarial and clerical help to the teams; and
to prepare and supervise the Applied Mathematics Laboratory budget
and to set appropriate fees.
Applied Mathematics Laboratory Committee
The Chairperson of the Department of Mathematics shall
appoint the members of the Applied Mathematics Laboratory Committee. The duties of the
Applied Mathematics Laboratory Committee are:
to recommend long range goals and policy for the Applied Mathematics
Laboratory;
to make contacts with prospective sponsors;
to advise the Applied Mathematics Laboratory Director of possible
sponsors and appropriate projects;
to assist in corporate negotiations on contractual and financial
arrangements;
to receive reports and evaluations on the Applied Mathematics Laboratory
Director at the end of each semester; and
to advise and consult on the purchase of equipment and supplies.
