Services
Using Center Services
Hours: The Counseling Center is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. In an emergency after hours, Counseling Center personnel can be reached by the Campus Police, at 410-704-2133.
Costs: Most Counseling Center services are free to TU students. A very few services involve a nominal fee.
CONFIDENTIALITY. Counseling often deals with very personal and highly private issues. Successful outcome depends on a feeling of freedom on the client's part to express feelings, attitudes and thoughts with people who respect them and their right to privacy. Interviews conducted are confidential and information is not released except with the client's written permission or as may be required by law. The importance of confidentiality is reflected in the Counseling Center's adherence to the Code of Ethics of the American Psychological Association. For more on confidentiality.
YOUR INITIAL CONTACT. To use the Counseling Center, call 410-704-2512 or come to the Glen Esk building to schedule an initial ("intake") appointment. Emergency appointments are also available upon request. Your "intake" counselor will help you to resolve your immediate concerns and to determine what ongoing Center services will be the most useful.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. If you cannot keep an appointment, it is important for you to notify the Center as soon as possible to assure continued service.
Services Individual and Couples Counseling
Individual counseling offers a private setting for resolving personal difficulties and achieving personal growth. Couples counseling provides a safe atmosphere for couples to examine and improve their relationship.
Group Counseling
Counseling groups are particularly helpful for many concerns, giving members an opportunity to share experiences, solve problems and practice new skills.
Future Planning and Personal Development
The Counseling Center assists students in personal life planning and decision making about one’s future
in a variety of ways. The Career Center is the place to go if students seek information about making potential career choices.
The Counseling Center can help if students feel that their career decision-making is complicated by personal concerns.

Individual Counseling
Professional staff are available by appointment for students who need assistance to:
* improve decision making skills,
* integrate life and academic goals,
* manage academic and life changes,
* make smooth transitions from high school to college or from college to work,
* learn skills necessary for success in the world (e.g., confidence, stress management, communication skills, effective problem solving skills and decision-making strategies)
* resolve personal challenges that can affect life and academic development (e.g., procrastination, poor concentration, multiple life stressors and limited social skills)
Alcohol and Drug Counseling
Specialized services are available for those who are troubled either by their own or someone else's abuse of alcohol or drugs. Various individual and group counseling programs are offered, including a court-approved program for those who have received a DWI citation. This program is certified by the State of Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Waiting time for these services is minimal.
Referral
Center staff members have information about a variety of resources and services on campus and in the surrounding metropolitan area. We work closely with each client to find appropriate sources of help and to make the referral process as positive and easy as possible.
Outreach and Consultation
The counseling Center staff provides workshops and programs to the Towson University community on various topics, including time management, assertiveness training, stress management and communication skills. These workshops and programs may be customized to meet your needs. Staff members are also available to consult with students, faculty and staff on various topics, including improving the campus environment, diversity issues or other issues relating to the quality of life at Towson University.
