Jess & Mildred Fisher College of Science & Mathematics

Dr. Josh Dehlinger and Dean David Vanko The ability to be a good mentor requires many qualities including the ability to serve, develop, and inspire mentorees, and this faculty member has the ability to do that.

To paraphrase one of the nomination letters, the recipient is an excellent teacher, an accomplished scholar but one of his main accomplishments is ensuring real-world experiences for many of the majors in his department. As the department Internship Coordinator he routinely advises and mentors over 150 students. Additionally he has supervised over 40 undergraduate and graduate students on research projects or project development.

In his role as Internship Coordinator, the awardee takes a very personal interest in the experience for the student and has visited over 60 Baltimore-area companies to discuss internship opportunities for Towson students.

When reviewing his mentorship of student projects, he has been very successful in the dissemination of the results. Of 20 graduate student projects supervised, 11 have resulted in peer-reviewed research papers with the students listed as first author. Several of the projects have a larger impact on society such as a mobile application developed for NPR Labs to deliver real-time audio transcripts to listeners with hearing disabilities or a software tool to detect security vulnerabilities in web software that is used by developers.

His mentorship does not end after graduation as he continues to assist students and often receives updates based on his recommendations that end with thanks because they got an interview or a job or a scholarship. It is very clear that his students are a high priority for the awardee and they appreciate that.

The awardee received a B.S. in Management of Computer Systems from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Iowa State University.

Join me in offering congratulations to Dr. Josh Dehlinger from the Department of Computer and Information Sciences.
