Smith Hall, located in the center of campus, houses the departments of biology, chemistry and physics. This modern structure contains up-to-date facilities for instruction and research. Available instrumentation includes scanning and transmission electron microscopes, a laser spectroscopy system, ultracentrifuges, a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer, visible UV and infrared spectrometers, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers, microcomputers and computer terminal access, photographic laboratories, physiographs and radioisotope utilization, and monitoring facilities.
The Albert S. Cook Library, adjacent to Smith Hall, contains approximately 700,000 books and non-book items and over 2,000 periodical titles. These materials are accessed through an integrated online catalog that includes not only the holdings of Towson University but also the resources of the other libraries in the University System of Maryland. A cooperative borrowing and delivery agreement with other USM libraries exists to help share library materials. Other bibliographic computer networks provide access to state and national databases.
