“The mission of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is to advance academic freedom and shared governance, to define fundamental professional values and standards for higher education, and to ensure higher education's contribution to the common good. Founded in 1915, the AAUP has helped to shape American higher education by developing the standards and procedures that maintain quality in education and academic freedom in this country's colleges and universities.”
This is the first paragraph of the Mission Statement of the American Association of University Professors. The Towson University chapter of the American Association of University Professors is affiliated with the National AAUP and shares its goals, while at the same time being a uniquely Towson institution.
Any faculty member employed by the University with primary responsibility for classroom teaching, including librarians, elected department chairpersons, visiting lecturers, and part-time instructors, are automatically members of Towson's AAUP / Faculty Association. However, only those who pay the nominal dues of $15 are Active Members.
In order to protect faculty interests while furthering the mission of the University, Towson's AAUP / Faculty Association must represent and involve the faculty. We must have committed, active members so that we can truly say that we speak for the faculty. And we must have faculty input so that we can communicate our interests and concerns to the administration.
