Microsoft Office 2011 for Macs FAQs

Microsoft Office 2011 is the latest version of the Microsoft Office Suite for the Macintosh and includes: Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word. Reports from campus Mac users has been very positive. Office 2011 is compatible with Windows office versions: Office 2007 and 2010. 

1.  What does Office 2011 feature?
    

Some significant features of Office 2011 include: full screen views for all applications; templates are available and easy to use in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel; Outlook provides an improved e-mail and calendar application; and Visual Basic is supported so macros work. 2.  What versions of Office 2011 are available?

  • University Mac computers will have the Office for Mac Home and Business 2011 installed by staff from the Office of Technology Services, for details, see FAQ 3 below.
  • Personal Mac computers can purchase the following versions: Office for Mac Home and Business 2011or Office for Mac Home and Student 2011. The Home and Student version does not include Outlook. Office 2011 can be purchased at a great discount through the University Store, for details see the University Store Faculty/Staff Work at Home page for details.

3.  How do I get Office 2011 installed at the university?

Microsoft Office is provided at no cost to departments through the Maryland Education Enterprise Consortium (MEEC). Only university-owned Macs with a TU Property Tag attached to them, qualify for MEEC installations. Staff on the OTS Mac Support Team will schedule an Office 2011 installation, at your convenience. The installation takes less than 30 minutes and you can keep Office 2008 installed until you are comfortable with the new version.

To request an Office 2011 installation, follow the two steps below.

1.  Review the computer requirements below to confirm that your Mac meets the requirements

Office 2011 Computer Requirements:

• Mac must have an Intel processor
• Mac OS X version 10.5.8 (Leopard and above)
• 1 GB of RAM (minimum)
• 2.5 GB of available hard disk space.
• HFS+ hard disk format (also known as Mac OS Extended or HFS Plus).
• 1280 x 800 or higher resolution monitor.


2.  Contact the Faculty/Staff Help Center at 410.704.5151, select menu options 2+2+2 and request an: “installation of Microsoft Office 2011 for your university Mac." You will be asked to provide the following information to Help Center staff:

• Name
• Phone
• Office location
• TU Property Tag (of the Mac you want to install Office 2011 on)

Help Center staff will create a service request and assign it to staff on the Mac Support Team who will contact you to schedule an installation.

4.  How do I obtain Office 2011 for my personal Mac?

IMPORTANT: The Office versions below are licensed for personal Macs only and should not be installed on university Macs.

Faculty and staff: can purchase Office 2011 at a discount for their personal computers at the university store in the University Union. See the University Store Faculty/Staff Work at Home page for details.

5.  Will classrooms and computer labs upgrade to Office 2011?

Upgrades to classrooms and computer lab computers are generally handled locally, contact your department staff for information.

Outlook 2011

 

1.  What is Outlook 2011?

Outlook 2011 is the standard university e-mail application for Macs.  Outlook connects to the university Microsoft Exchange e-mail server to access your Towson University e-mail, contacts, calendar, and tasks. 2.  How do I configure Outlook for my Towson e-mail?

Outlook 2011 synchronizes with the university Exchange (e-mail) server enabling you to access Towson e-mail, calendar, contacts, and tasks. For details on setting up Outlook 2011 on your university or personal computer, see:

3.  Can I use Outlook personal folders (.PST files) in Outlook 2011?

If you use personal folder PST files, you will want to use Virtual Workspace for your PST files. Outlook 2011 does not allow you to store PST files on your H: drive. 4.  Can I post Office 2011 documents within Blackboard?


Yes, all Microsoft Office documents can be posted to Blackboard.

5.  Will Outlook work on personal Macs on or off campus?

6.  Will Outlook 2011 work on the TU Wireless network?

7.  What about Office 2011 training?

8.  What is Outlook Web App?

Outlook Web App (OWA) provides access to your Outlook e-mail, calendar, and contacts by using a Web browser. You can use OWA from any computer anywhere (Mac or Windows) that has access to the Internet and has a Web browser. For more information see:
