With the explosive growth of mobile devices, delivering convenience, security, and supportability is challenging. Our goal is to provide a reasonable balance that ensures access to university resources.

Please note that once you connect Towson University resources to a mobile device, e.g. email, whether it is university-owned or personally-owned, that device must be secured with a passcode. This requirement went into effect September 2012. Further information follows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Support

  • The Office of Technology Services (OTS) provides support for all university-owned devices.
  • OTS provides only limited support for personal devices which consists of providing configuration information to connect to university resources.
  • Click here for more information and the Scope of Support Fact Sheet.
  • Click here for Apple iOS Resources and Guidelines

Security

  • Any mobile device configured to access university email, calendar, and contacts will automatically require you to set a four-digit passcode to lock the device after a period of non-use. This applies to both personally and university-owned devices.
  • This passcode is one way to help prevent exposure of confidential or sensitive email or other identity information on your device.
  • For more information about securing your device and how to remotely wipe or erase the data if your device is lost or stolen, click here.

Purchasing

  • Tablets and iPads purchased with university funds must be approved by a department head. All devices purchased must be inventoried and tagged with a TU property tag.
  • Smart phones purchased with university funds must be approved by both a department head and the Vice President of Administration and Finance.
  • For additional information on purchasing, university policies regarding cellular and mobile devices, and approval forms, click here.

Configuring a Mobile Device to Access Email, Contacts, and Calendar

  • OTS provides instructions for configuring a personal iPhone/iPad/iPod to access university email, contacts, and calendar.
  • Because there are so many versions of the Android operating system, OTS provides only general configuration instructions.
  • Configuration instructions can be found here. If you need help, we recommend printing these instructions and taking them to your cellular provider provider for assistance in configuring your personally-owned device.
