PARKING AND TRANSPORTATION SERVICES

Alternative Transportation & Green Initiatives

A bike rack in front of Stephens Hall.

Whether it's access to a carpooling database or a free ride to work via the off-campus shuttle, Parking and Transportation Services is committed to providing alternative transportation options to the campus community. We encourage students, faculty and staff members to take advantage of the carpooling, shuttle, biking and public transportation options provided on campus. Utilizing the program incentives can not only save you money, it can help you lower your environmental impact, too.

The Alternative Transportation program provides convenient, cost effective and environmentally-friendly options to help you get to Towson University's campus.

Hybrid Vehicle Permits

As part of Towson University's Go Green initiative, Parking and Transportation Services is offering a hybrid vehicle permit program. Eligible faculty, staff and students who drive hybrid vehicles can obtain an annual parking permit at half of the applicable rate.

Below is a link to the application and policies associated with the hybrid vehicle permit program. Applications must be renewed each academic year for students.

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations- Coming Soon April 2013

Towson University is currently in the process of installing electric vehicle charging stations on campus. These stations will serve as charging points for electric vehicle owners. The charging stations are provided by ChargePoint. More information about the equipment can be found here.

Benefits

  • Enhance the University’s alternative transportation program
  • Contribute to the University’s sustainable commitment and go green initiative
  • Reduce the University’s greenhouse gas inventory
  • Reduce the university’s costs on fuel for its own vehicle fleet
  • Encourage the electric vehicle market

How the Program Works

  • EV Charging station parking spaces will be located throughout the campus
  • Must have a vaild TU parking permit (M-Thu 6a-8p & Fri 6a-3p) and be plugged in at all times to occupy space
  • Charging stations available 24/7
  • No long-term parking allowed

How to use a ChargePoint charging station:

Look for the reader symbol.
Use your ChargePoint card or contactless credit card at any ChargePoint-ready charging station.

Start a charging session:
Hold your ChargePoint card or contactless credit card over the station's reader symbol. After the station authorizes you, remove the charging station's connector by pressing down on the button at the top of the handle while pulling the connector from the holster. Plug the connector into your electric vehicle. The station will display a message indicating the vehicle is charging.

Stop a charging session:
Hold your card over the station's reader symbol. The station indicates that charging has completed. Return the connector to the station's holster by pressing down on the button at the top of the handle while pulling the connector from your electric vehicle. The station may display the charging duration and cost (if any) of your charging session.

Incentives

We understand that circumstances sometimes require you to bring a vehicle to campus or find immediate transportation home. To make these situations easier for individuals who utilize alternative transportation, we offer two back-up plans. Every commuter student, faculty and staff member who registers for alternative transportation will automatically receive four free day-long parking codes each semester, which can be used whenever you need to bring your vehicle to campus. Each person will also be registered for the Guaranteed Ride Home service, which provides you with a subsidized taxi ride or short-term car rental when you have to leave campus unexpectedly.
