This program was established to protect laboratory personnel, students, staff, faculty and the environment from biohazardous substances, as well as to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations. The program is presently comprised of the Institutional Biosafety (IBC) and the Institutional Animal Care and Use (IACUC) Committees, and the Bloodborne Pathogens and the Special Medical Waste Programs. Services include: providing information to researchers on recommended procedures for handling potentially pathogenic microorganisms, organisms containing recombinant DNA and research involving animals; conducting lab inspections; monitoring biological safety cabinets and autoclaves; and ensuring the proper disposal of infectious/special medical waste.
