Changes to Federal Financial Aid, effective the 2009-10 Academic Year
The U.S. Department of Education recently changed its regulations on the use of federal financial aid loans and grants. Under the new regulations, federal financial aid loans and grants awarded for an academic year may not be used to satisfy previous semester/ term tuition and fee charges exceeding $200. This applies to subsidized federal loans, unsubsidized federal loans, and Federal Pell Grants.
The regulations will prevent federal financial aid awarded for the 2009-10 year from financing tuition or fees for the 2009 trimester. Trimester charges must be paid with financial aid awarded for the trimester or with a personal payment made by the due date listed on the trimester billing statement.
