Conservation Contest

The greenest resource is the one you don’t use. Every February, resident students practice the art of using less during the Conservation Contest, an annual energy-saving competition sponsored by the University Residence Government (URG). The competition pits campus residence halls against each other to see which building can achieve the greatest cumulative energy reduction over the previous February’s totals, encouraging peers to practice basic conservation measures like turning off the lights, unplugging appliances, and turning down the thermostat. Contest winners for each year are listed below.

How it works

Throughout the competition, TU energy managers measure energy consumption in campus residence halls using electronic smartmeters that are installed in most campus buildings. URG students take the data from campus energy managers and compare it to prior year information. The building with the highest cumulative energy reduction from the previous February wins the competition and earns a free burrito dinner for its residents!
