Keep your system at it's current patch level to minimize exposure to security threats. All major operating system offer ways to regulary check for updates and apply them. For Windows users, ensure that automatic updates is turned on. To check your settings, visit Microsoft Windows Update.
Getting antivirus software
Regulary scans your system for virus/malware, trojans, and spyware. Be sure to keep it up-to-date and run automatic scans every day. For more information, visit Antivirus Software.
Having a firewall
Firewalls will block any unwanted sources trying to access your system that it deems a threat. You can edit your firewall to allow and deny anything that you might find you need or do not want accessing your computer. For more information, see Windows Firewall Settings.
Avoid phishing
Any email that appears to be from your bank or popular Websites that is asking for your password, credit card information, or any other personal information is suspicious and may be a phishing scam. For more information on phishing, see Spam/Phishing.
Backup your data regularly
Backing up your data onto a CD or a portable hard drive is important if you have files that you wouldn't want to be lost incase your system needed to be wiped. Many viruses can corrupt data so backing up your data regularly ensures minimal loss.
