Configuring your Android Smartphone to Receive Towson E-mail

 

Please remember that Smartphones download university e-mail along with attachments that may contain sensitive information. OTS recommends you not store sensitive data on these devices, and that you increase the security of your device by using a password on your device.  Check your manual, or see your cellular service provider for assistance setting up a password.

 

Presently there are several models of Android phones with slight differences in the Operating System.  The following instructions may not follow step-by-step for your phone, however the information provided can be used along with the instructions from your cell phone provider's Web site, to properly configure your phone.  You can also to take them to your cellular provider's store for assistance.


  1. From the home screen, touch the Applications tab (located on the bottom of the screen).

  1. From your Applications screen go to the e-mail app.

  1. Enter your Exchange e-mail address and password.

  2. When prompted to choose the account type, choose Exchange.

  3. Enter the Exchange server settings in the appropriate fields:
    • Domain\Username: towsonu\yourNetID     
    • Password: Enter your Password
    • Exchange Server: outlook.towson.edu
    • Check Use secure connection (SSL), then click Next.

  1. If you are prompted to give Outlook access to security features press OK.

*Note: This permission allows you to remotely wipe your device clean of all personal information in the case your device is lost or stolen

  1. Changing the Inbox Checking Frequency will significantly affect battery life between charges. The battery charge will last longer the less often you set it to check for new e-mail. You can also change the amount of e-mails that are synchronized to the phone. Click Next once you choose your settings.

*Note: If your Inbox Checking Frequency is set at a high number you can still force the e-mail application to search for new e-mails by entering into the app.

  1. Now that your account is set-up you can give the account a name. This final step is completely optional. Click Done once you are finished.
