Student Technology Fees

 

Software Application Categories

• Categories 1-4: Typically funded through Student Technology Fees
• Category 5: Student Technology Fees may occasionally be used, on a case-by-case basis
• Category 6 and above: Department or college operating funds or class/studio/lab fees are the typical funding source; please discuss with your dean or the Provost’s Budget Office


Category Description
1 Operating System Software (Non-Server)

• Initial operating system installation or upgrades that are not covered by MEEC campus licensing. Examples: Mac OS; Windows, etc.

2 Class and Lab Management Applications

• Applications that allow the instructor to control or manage students in a classroom or lab. Example: LAN School
• System management utility applications that allow lab managers or others to effectively, efficiently, or securely manage the computer environment. Example: Symantec Ghost; VNC.
• Print management applications. Examples: Print Manager Plus

3 Infrastructure, Virtualization, and Accessibility

• Accessibility applications needed by people with disabilities. Example: Jaws Screen Reader
• Virtualization software needed to present applications or environments for student use. Examples: Microsoft Virtual PC; VMWare; VMFusion.

4 Audiovisual and Presentation Applications

• Applications that enable or support classroom audiovisual and presentation technology such as projectors, smart boards, interactive response systems (clickers), document camera, or other audiovisual equipment
• Software to control the audiovisual system: Crestron RoomView client.

5 General-Use Applications

• Applications used or which could be used by students from a wide variety of academic disciplines. Examples: Microsoft Office, Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop, SAS, SPSS.

6 Discipline-Specific Applications

• Applications used support of specific courses, plans, or programs; software used by a subset of students or in Examples: Visual Studio (computer programming environment); Soloist (foreign language software); SANAKO (foreign language software); Avid Pro Tools (audio production); Finale (music notation and composition software)
• Software used for specific research projects by the instructor or students.

7 Databases, Server Applications

• Commercial databases (locally installed, server-based, or Internet-hosted). Example: Dun & Bradstreet, Harris Infosource, etc.
• Server operating systems or other software for departmental or college LANs/ Example: Oracle, SQL Server.

8 Apparatus and Equipment Controller Software

• Applications used to manage, monitor, control, or collect data from research or testing apparatus and other equipment.
• Applications used to manage room systems. Example: lighting board software (theater).
