Configuring your Windows Mobile Device to Receive Towson Email
Please remember that Smart Phones download university email along with attachments that may contain sensitive information. OTS recommends you not store sensitive data on these devices, and that you increase the security of your device by using a password on your device. Check your manual, or see your cellular service provider for assistance setting up a password.
Start by locating the ActiveSync icon on your Windows Mobile phone. This icon should be located under Programs. If you are using an HTC phone, you may have to select All Programs from the Sense UI menu.
Towson University supports wireless synchronization to our Exchange server, so you can synchronize your mail without connecting to a computer. Press set up your device to sync with it.
Enter your email address and uncheckAttempt to detect Exchange Server Settings automatically. Select Next.
Under Server address type in outlook.towson.edu. Place a check in the box next to This server requires an encrypted (SSL) connection. Select Next.
Enter your NetID information in the User name and password fields. Type in towson.edu next to Domain. Put a check in the box to save your password.
Select the services you want to synchronize. You can set custom options for Calendar and E-mail by highlighting the item and clicking the Settings button. Highlight Calendar and press the Settings button.
All future events in your calendar are synced, but by default only the past two weeks are. You can change this setting by pressing the arrow and selecting the desired time period. Press OK to go back to the previous menu.
Highlight Email and press the Settings button. Here you can choose to download e-mails going back earlier than 3 days. You can choose to download attachments, and set a size limit for downloaded attachments. Press OK to return to the previous menu.
Once you select Finish, you will be prompted to allow outlook.towson.edu to enforce security policies on your device. Towson does not currently enforce any security policies other than requiring SSL connections. Press OK to continue.
Your initial synchronization may take some time, especially if you elected to download attachments as well as e-mail. Once the synchronization is complete, press the Menu button and select Schedule.
Keeping Active Sync set to As items arrive can be very battery draining. You can select pre-defined time periods, such as every 30 minutes, or set it to sync manually, which means nothing synchronizes until you press the Sync button. Press OK after you have made your selection. Your Windows Mobile Smartphone is now ready to go.
