3 Questions With...

Dr. Gary Rubin,

Vice President,

University Advancement

Why is philanthropy so important to the advancement of higher education?

As state dollars become less plentiful and the cost of higher education continues to rise, the need for private support is vitally important in ensuring a quality education for our students so that upon graduation from Towson University they will be prepared for life and work. In addition, through philanthropy, scholarships provide support for students who otherwise would never receive a college education and thus not be able to contribute to a strong workforce for our state and the nation.

TU Urban Farm

The Towson University Urban Farm, established just two years ago, has made a major impact on the TU community. The group's mission is to raise awareness about the production of food and the use of sustainable/organic methods to grow food, and to encourage healthier eating habits by promoting these ideas to local communities. TU Urban Farm members, advised by Ben Warner, grow plants organically in a garden located next to TU's Administration Building. They also use sustainable methods whenever possible, including the construction of a water catchment system to collect rain water off the roof of a shed located next to the garden. The TU Urban Farm provides students with the opportunity to develop leadership skills by participating in a collective group where each member's contributions make a significant difference. The TU Urban Farm has already sold its vegetables on campus at a farmers market and plans to hold more in the future along with providing food donations to the community.
