SOFTWARE TIP OF THE WEEK
Excel 2007: How can I highlight an email address or link in Excel 2007 without activating it?
If you have a spreadsheet that contains links, it's a trick to click on the cell without activating the link. Once "activated," the link with open in your internet browser – or if you click on a linked email address it may open Outlook and start a new email message.
To avoid activating the link, hold the Ctrl key down while you click the email address or link.
If you prefer to remove the link (and keep the text), you can do one of the following:
Option A. To remove one link (and keep the text), right-click on the link and choose Remove Hyperlink.
Option B. To remove all links in a worksheet at once (and keep the text), you will need to go "under the hood" in Excel. WARNING: The following cannot be undone. Save a copy of your file before you follow the next steps.
1. Open the Visual Basic Editor, hold down the Alt key and click the F11 key. A new window should open up.
2. Hold down the Ctrl key and click the G key. A new box at the bottom of the window should appear titled Immediate.
3. Type the following into the Immediate dialog box: Selection.hyperlinks.delete
4. Press the Enter key on your keyboard.
5. Select File > Close and Return to Microsoft Excel.
