Master of Education in Art Education

The majority of students pursuing the Master of Education degree in art education do so on a part-time basis, as most are working in schools everyday. The program consists of 33 units and is geared specifically for K–12 art teachers. Students must be certified in art in order to be accepted. Since virtually the entire program consists of educators, students take the course work during the evenings and summers. Most students take between 6–9 units per term and graduate in approximately 4 years. There is a 7-year limit for completion of course work. Up to 15 credits of course work may be transferred in from other institutions. Students take 15 units of required course work and 18 units of electives in three different tracks: broad-based studio, in-depth studio and art history. At the culmination of the program students do a thesis project for 6–9 units. Graduates of the program have gone on to obtain doctoral degrees in art education, and have become leaders in the field as art supervisors, curriculum specialists and department chairs. The program is nationally recognized for its high quality.
