General Education
General education at Towson University centers on two general categories (Skills for Liberal Learning and Concepts for Liberal Learning) divided into 12 subcategories made up of 418 courses in 46 departments. General education courses are certified as general education course offerings by the General Education Subcommittee of the Curriculum Committee of the University Senate. Courses are re-certified as general education courses on a regular cycle.
General Education Assessment
Formal assessment of general education courses occurs within each general education subcategory course grouping. Prior to fall 2006, assessment of general education courses has been tied to the re-certification process. Five sub-categories of Skills for Liberal Learning and one subcategory of Context for Liberal Learning were assessed as part of the re-certification of these course groupings. A new subcommittee of the University Assessment Council was convened in spring 2008 to develop and implement an updated assessment plan for general education competencies at Towson University in keeping with the Towson 2010 strategic initiatives and the university's focus on institution-wide assessment.
