Towson University’s Baltimore Immigration Summit is a one-day event which brings together academics, service providers, activists, community leaders, and others working with and for immigrants in our region.  Baltimore is an area with a growing and diverse immigrant population, as well as local government that views immigrants as an important part of the city’s resurgence.

The theme of this year’s Summit is “Reframing the Issues.”  We encourage a reframing of how immigration has often been seen as a divisive “us vs. them” issue. Immigrants and refugees reframe their lives, as they undertake journeys seeking better economic opportunities, family reunification, and, at times, escape from torture, trauma, and natural disaster. American policies sometimes reframe economies and politics of immigrants’ home countries, setting in motion large movements of people to this country. Debates about immigration reform from both the right and left seek to reframe both our images of and policies towards current and potential immigrants. The Summit’s mission is to reframe the issues and support collaboration between and among those working in the academic, non-profit, governmental and activist communities toward goals of enhancing opportunities for immigrant populations within the United States, particularly in Baltimore and Maryland.
