                                                                                                                                        New Curriculum:
                                         Secondary School Biology and General Science Teaching Concentration 
Students who complete this concentration and the required courses in the Department of Secondary Education will meet certification requirements to teach secondary school biology and general science in at least 33 states, including Maryland. Students must register with the Department of Secondary Education and should have an advisor in that department in addition to their advisor in the Department of Biological Sciences. Students should consult the Department of Secondary Education regarding any recent changes in certification requirements.
Students with bachelor's degrees who desire to become certified to teach either biology or general science in Maryland or other states should contact the Department of Secondary Education for advising in a Professional Education Program and also contact the Department of Biological Sciences for an advisor.

  Core Courses (13 credits)
  Breadth Courses (16-20 credits)
    BIOL 205 (General Botany) 4 credits
    BIOL 207 (General Zoology) 4 credits
   Choose one of the following:
    BIOL 408 (Cell Biology) 4 credits
    BIOL 409 (Molecular Biology) 3 credits
   Choose one of the following:
    BIOL 213 and 214 (Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II) 4 credits each or
    BIOL 325 (Animal Physiology) 4 credits
  Elective Courses (8-12 credits)
   Biology electives selected from the other concentrations and approved by an advisor to bring the total to 40 Biology credits.
  Ancillary Courses (32-34 credits)
   Chemistry (18 credits)
    CHEM 110 and 111 (General Chemistry I and II) 4 credits each
    CHEM 331 and 332 (Organic Chemistry I and II) 5 credits each
   Physics (8 credits)
    As required for the Biology major
   Mathematics (3-4 credits); One of the following:
    MATH 211 (Calculus for Applications) 3 credits
    MATH 273 (Calculus) 4 credits
  Physical Science Courses (3-4 credits)
   One of the following:
    GEOL 121 (Physical Geology) 4 credits
