                                                                                                                Undergraduate Research Opportunities

At Towson, we offer several opportunities for Undergraduate Research.  One way to get your feet wet is by doing a summer project.  It's a great beginning for a future Biologist!  TU Biology REU Program in Molecular Ecology June 4 - August 10, 2007...click here for details!

For information on paid summer research internships at other universities and research institutes, check out the National Science Foundation REU program site. Deadlines are nearing for applications so if you are interested check today!

Another way to see what's out there for undergrads is to keep an eye on this site.  When an opportunity arises, it will be posted here in the green box below.  Remember, aside from being challenging and fun, gaining research experience as an undergraduate is one way to put yourself above the competition.  Go ahead, impress yourself.

Extensive information on undergraduate research opportunities at TU and off-campus can be found in the Biology Major's Handbook.

We are already thinking about the fall!

It's not even summer yet and SCA is already looking ahead to the fall. SCA, in partnership with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, is taking part in a nationwide effort to eradicate invasive plants on refuge lands.

We are looking to fill teams consisting of four interns to tackle this project. The team will focus on early detection and rapid response through inventory, mechanical and chemical control methods, and GPS data collection. Interns will work in remote and diverse terrain, managing targeted invasive species like Tamarisk (salt cedar). The impact of Tamarisk is dramatic: consuming up to 300 gallons of water in a single day, producing thousands of wind-dispersed seeds, and secreting salt that changes soil health.

An "invasive species" is defined as a species that is non-native to an ecosystem and whose introduction causes or is likely to harm the human, environmental or economic health. After habitat loss, invasive species are considered the greatest threat to global diversity. "Without having considerable resources going into the matter of controlling alien invasives, the goal of preserving biodiversity cannot be met" - Peter Raven

You can actually apply for these fall positions right now and get your name on a list of people who are interested in these positions.  As a reminder, SCA's positions are expense-paid including paid travel, bi-weekly stipend, and possibility of an Americorps education grant.

In The News:
SCA has been selected to lead the recovery efforts of volunteers at Mt Rainier. We will work with park staff to assess backcountry damage and help them design and implement a multi-year recovery strategy. SCA staff and interns will direct the efforts of the many volunteers coming to help the Park get back on its feet.
