This course centers around nine artists who
dared to break with conventions and try something
new. Students will explore personal imagery
and many different techniques for paper collage,
including resists, transfers, and various textures. The
primary medium will be acrylics, but participants
will also use charcoal, acrylic mediums, papers
and other materials. Students will work
on nine images that will become either a nine
patch image, a series or an artist book. The
class is open to all levels of students interested
in exploring new directions in art.
Instructor Nancy Scheinman’s collage
paintings reflect the myth of a purer past
within the framework of a modernist grid,
fusing internalized landscapes and personal
narrative. Her work has been included in
over 100 exhibitions in museums and galleries
throughout the United States, South America,
Europe and Asia. Collectors of her work include
the National Museum of Women in the Arts,
the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Portland
Museum of Art, the Washington DC Convention
Center, Fidelity Investments and Mohamed
Abou El Enein in Cairo. Her work can be viewed
in depth at www.scheinman.com along
with information about upcoming exhibitions
and workshops.

Students will focus on developing stronger
drawing and painting skills and techniques, with
a concentration on intuitive approaches to water-based
painting. The course will introduce and explore
innovative techniques including: oil pastels
with mineral oil, chalk pastels with water and
creative work with ink. Concepts will be presented
each week for participants to use as a springboard
in which to focus on specific areas of concentration.
With frequent critiques, students will be encouraged
to develop their own direction.
Instructor Ruth Pettus was
born in New Zealand and spent her childhood
in London and Australia. She studied at the
University of Sydney, and at the Corcoran
School of Art in Washington, D. C. Now residing
in Baltimore, her paintings have been exhibited
regionally and internationally. Examples
