Classes for Children and Teens - Spring 2013

  YOUNG ARTIST WORKSHOP Little Hands - Big Art
ages 5-7 

6 Saturdays, 9:45 am- 11:45 am

Let young imaginations soar! Creative thinking will be encouraged by exploring a variety of media, including collage, paint, clay, pastel and found objects. Young artists will discover not only the building blocks of art - color, line, texture, shape and composition, but also new ways to see and express a world of both form and fantasy. People, animals, landscape, architecture and the work of other artists will inspire little hands for big art. This course is designed so youngsters have fun while learning about art.

EXPLORING ART!
Different Lands, Different Art
ages 7-10 

6 Saturdays, 9:45 am - 11:45 am

Bring your passport for ARTventure - with Art as a vehicle and imagination for fuel, you can go anywhere! Students will experiment with a variety of materials as they explore art from different lands and different times. As they journey from place to place, students will experience a wide range of both 2- & 3- dimensional art processes, including painting, printmaking, sculpture and clay. At times students may choose their own destinations - visit Monet's garden, travel in space, visit the pyramids - the possibilities are endless! Topics will vary each session to encourage students to discover new and exciting ways of expressing themselves through art.

 CLAY IS THE WAY
ages 7-11

6 Saturdays, 9:45 am - 11:45 am

April 6 - May 11

Children can let their imaginations take form with the exciting process of handbuilding with clay. This class will teach students how to create fantasy and whimsical objects such as figures, creatures, boxes and more! Play in the mud and discover new techniques of handbuilding and glazing to transform ordinary clay into extraordinary artwork. Projects will vary each session to allow for returning students. Includes firing fee.

 DRAWING & DESIGN
ages 7-10

6 Saturdays, 9:45 am - 11:45 am

Pastel drawing of gourds

This course is designed for the student who loves to draw, but needs direction. Learning to draw what is seen (both real and imaginary) is a vital step for all other art forms. Students will learn to hold the pencil so that it moves with the muscles of the eye. Using various materials, they will also learn how to make tonal shaded drawings, contour line drawings and quick responsive gesture sketches. The class will focus on understanding the basic elements of composition and design.

 CARTOONING, COMICS & MANGA
ages 10-15 

6 Saturdays, 9:45 am - 11:45 am

April 13 - May 18

This course will provide practical assignments to develop drawing and storytelling skills for comics, manga and anime. After an introduction to cartooning, students will create characters for their own stories. Class lessons will explore character design, storyboarding, background design, inking, painting, and pencil animation. Continuing students will focus on producing their own comic book or manga.

SATURDAY STUDIO:
Drawing & Painting
ages 11-16

For older students who wish to sharpen and refine their drawing skills or for those who have taken a previous class, we offer Drawing & Painting. Going beyond the topics offered in the younger Drawing & Design class, advanced themes will include drawing from reality to fantasy and abstraction. Students will move from drawing into painting with water-based acrylics and watercolor. This class is also recommended for those who wish to apply to area art schools and need to build a body of work to strengthen their portfolios. Continuing students will expand their skills.

 POTTER'S WHEEL & Hand Building
ages 12-adult 

6 Saturdays, 9:45 am -11:45 am

April 6 - May 11

Create unique ceramic artwork with ordinary clay and a spin of the wheel. Learn to use the potter’s wheel and imaginative handbuilding and glazing techniques to produce one-of-a-kind ceramic objects and vessels. Topics include wedging, centering and wheel throwing, along with coiling, slab construction and glaze applications. Working with clay can be a therapeutic process as you make something beautiful with your hands. Returning students will be able to concentrate on either the wheel or hand built construction. For beginners and intermediate students. Includes firing fee.

ANIMATION
ages 12-18 

3 Saturdays, 9:30 am - 12 noon

Take cartooning to the next level! Turn your illustrations and cartoons into animated objects and characters created on the computer. This workshop introduces students to computer graphic software programs used in animation. Students will learn basic image editing techniques with Adobe Photoshop and 2-D linear animation using Flash. This class is designed for participants of all levels. Some experience with computer graphics and cartooning or drawing helpful. Participants should bring a USB Flash drive for saving work.

DIGITAL PAINTING & DRAWING
ages 12-18/adult 

3 Saturdays, 9:30 am - 12 noon

April 13 -April 27

Enhance your drawing and painting skills using the computer as your art tool. This course is an exciting introduction into art-making skills of the 21st century. Students will create unique art in Photoshop using state-of-the-art technology: widescreen iMacs, digitizing tablets for drawing with a stylus, scanners, and a Wacom Cintiq to experiment with touch-screen drawing. Using their imaginations, along with references including photographs, personal artwork and “found objects/images,” students will create new and original digital compositions. Discover the possibilities! Participants should bring a USB Flash drive.
