Lifelong Health & Well-Being

TU is a leader in addressing community health and well-being across the Greater Baltimore region.

We believe that supporting family stability through the lens of health and well-being is essential and we are working across the spectrum to provide services from pre-natal to the elderly.

Institute for Well-Being

We are excited about the work being done in partnership through the Institute for Well-Being. Located in downtown Towson, the Institute for Well-Being includes world-class equipment, collaborative spaces, and resources that are used every day to not only make a difference in children, parents, and individual’s lives but also provide our students with hands-on experience that is one-of-a-kind. Programs include:

  • Stroke recovery support
  • Life skills and workplace preparation programs for adults with autism
  • A preschool program that combines speech-language and occupational therapies
  • Hearing and audiology screening
  • Medical fitness programs

Helping Up

Helping Up Mission Partnership

Since 2003, the Department of Nursing has partnered with the Helping Up Mission in Baltimore City to develop and implement health education, screening programs, and treatment services for the Mission's 500 member residents. Most recently, Dr. Mary A. Lashley, who also serves on their Board of Directors, has worked with Mission leadership to develop the Mission's first ever Center for Health and Wellness. This Center will create opportunities for students and faculty from the College of Health Professions to offer more health and wellness programs, provide service-learning opportunities, and allow for faculty to engage in community-based research that benefits the Mission's homeless population.

Occupational Therapy

Supporting Older Adults through Health Screenings

Students in this service-learning course in the Occupational Therapy and Occupational Science Department provide health screenings and education on topics such as fall risks, hand function, and vision to older adults living independently in the community. This results in these adults maximizing their independence while students get to apply their occupational therapy training in a hands-on environment.
