A group of Towson University CBE students are competing with four other university teams for the chance to represent the local region at the CFA Institute’s Global Investment Research Challenge this coming April in New York.

Sponsored by the CFA Society of Washington and the Baltimore CFA Society, the local competition challenges students to produce a research report analyzing a chosen company under the guidance of a faculty mentor and a professional research analyst. The student teams will be judged by a panel of experts from top financial institutions. The subject company for the Baltimore/Washington area’s inaugural challenge is Baltimore-based Under Armour, Inc. If selected the winner, the teams will travel to New York for the global competition. Last year, more than 2,500 students from 546 universities representing 45 countries participated in the event.

The TU CBE team’s faculty mentor is assistant finance professor Michaël Dewally and Jeffrey S. DeVack, CFA, a senior portfolio analyst at T. Rowe Price, is assisting as the industry professional. The students—Trevor Barger, Robert Eubank, McGregor Kennedy, Ryan Larkin and Brian Schug—are all finance majors in their senior year.

The team’s written analysis of the research project is due in January and teams will give formal presentations to the judges on March 2.

The other local participating institutions are American University, Georgetown University, John Hopkins University and the University of Maryland. On Nov. 11, the student team and Dr. Dewally attended the Kick Off Party hosted by American University. The students had the opportunity to be introduced to the standards of the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct and interact with top executives of the target firm. In attendance and leading the presentation was Brad Dickerson, Chief Financial Officer of Under Armour, Inc., and Tom Shaw, CFA, Director of Investor Relations. The student teams were afforded the chance to ask questions directly to the presenters.

CBE Council hosted a panel discussion with a focus on “Roles of Diversity in the Workplace” on Nov. 2.

With the increasingly interconnected and globalized world, capitalizing on workplace diversity has become a strategic priority for some companies and organizations. Panelists discussed how the scope of diversity has moved from addressing discrimination to a proactive focus on inclusion as well as diversity recruiting and more.

Speakers included Wayne Fraizer, Sr., president of the Maryland Washington Minority Contractors’ Association, Anna-Maria Gonzalez Palmer, vice president of human resources and security for AAI Corp., Nancy Hafford, president of the Towson Chamber of Commerce and Lorie Logan-Bennett, director of TU’s Career Center. Panelists also answered questions from students about how to build better resumes.

The event was a part of the CBE Council's initiative for raising student and faculty awareness about issues surrounding diversity.

CBE student Vrindarani Pani has been selected to represent Towson University in the statewide Leading Women’s Scholarship program. Sponsored by Wells Fargo, the $1,500 scholarship is awarded to one outstanding female college student in Maryland in conjunction with The Daily Record's Top 100 Women and Leading Women programs.

CBE students Bobby Eubank, Nathan Wotell, Patrick Kowalczyk, Michael Calabrese and Jessica Buchanan won second place at the first annual Gill/McDaniel College Finance Case Competition on Oct. 19 in Westminster, Md.

The student team competed against other area schools in a finance and marketing case that asked them to determine if a local brewer should decide to accept, defer or abandon a new product introduction. The team presented their case to a panel of six professional judges from T. Rowe Price, UBS and other area financial institutions. The team's decision to defer the investment and their outstanding presentation led to winning second place.

The team members also decided to donate $200 of their prize money to the CBE finance lab. Robert Eubank, portfolio manager of the Towson University Investment Group and member of the winning team, said “We feel that the finance lab will be a great asset to the finance department, as well as the College of Business and Economics, and we couldn't be more elated to donate to this terrific learning tool.”

Patrick Kowalczyk, team member and current president of Towson University’s Financial Management Association, added “[The team] would like to thank the organizers of the Gill/McDaniel Finance Case Competition for giving us the opportunity to represent Towson University, the College of Business and Economics and specifically the Department of Finance in this event”.

Michaël Dewally, faculty co-adviser to the Financial Management Association and to the Towson University Investment Group, attended the event and was impressed by the professionalism of the team’s presentation, the thoroughness of its analysis and the quality of the competition the students faced. Plans are on the way to participate again next year and add a second entry from Towson University in the competition.
