In addition to increasing membership, the 23-member chapter hosted nearly a dozen guest speakers including human resource executives from Office Depot, Lockheed Martin, Union Memorial Hospital, the Maryland State Department of Education, among others. Among several charitable activities, TU's chapter raised $1,300 for the March of Dimes/March for Babies and volunteered with Moveable Feast, the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) and the National Academy Foundation –Academy of Finance.
"Without the students' involvement in the community and their solid student leadership, we would not have won the Merit Award," Nhung Nguyen, assistant professor of management and faculty advisor of the TU chapter of SHRM, says. "I have enjoyed working with this student organization because the students have been so great."
This is the first time that the TU chapter of SHRM has been presented with the Merit Award since 1991-1992.
Founded in 1948, SHRM's mission is to serve the needs of HR professionals by providing the most essential and comprehensive resources available and to advance the human resource profession to ensure that HR is recognized as an essential partner in developing and executing organizational strategy.
