First Homework Assignment

1. A completed, signed Learning Plan Agreement

2. Read Habit 1 from Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

3. Write a reflection paper on Habit 1

Consider “Habit 1: Be Proactive.” How does this habit challenge you to reflect on regarding your internship and other work experience to-date? What does this habit suggest for your personal and professional efforts in the future? What does this habit mean toward your adding value in your future career?

Reflection is the key to a meaningful professional experience. Reflection requires you to think critically about your work experience. You will not learn from your reflections unless you dedicate the time to write meaningful entries and approach this assignment as seriously as you would a research paper. The focus of the journal is meaningful reflection on your work-related experiences including your job tasks, interpersonal encounters, conflicts, crisis, work-/career-related thoughts, paperwork, meetings, and other experiences that you consider meaningful. The journal entries should reflect on what you have learned about your workplace, coworkers and supervisors, and yourself – your insights on your capabilities, limitations, work performance, or future development. Relate the experiences to theories, concepts or ideas in this and other courses, the Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes (KSA’s) of the college, and your learning objectives. Use this as a vehicle to make a brief analysis of events.

IMPORTANT: You must include at least four topics from each habit in your reflection journals. The following questions may be used as a guide for your reflection journal:

  • What happened today/this week? Describe the experience.
  • What did you do? Describe what you did and why you did it.
  • What didn’t you do or say that you could have? Why?
  • What risks did you take or avoid; new behaviors you tried?
  • What were the effects of what you did; what did you feel about those results?
  • What have you learned that you might not have learned in the classroom?
  • What realizations, insights or lessons have you learned about yourself, your coworkers, sponsors, etc.?
  • How does what you are doing relate to your learning goals for this semester?
  • What KSA’s, other than your personal learning goals, did you enhance/learn?
