INTERNSHIPS & CAREER SERVICES

Professional Experience

As part of the College's Business Excellence program, the Professional Experience course (BUSX 460) focuses on a successful transition between the last college term and the first day of professional work. Students take an internship as part of the course. Through self-assessment, students develop a portfolio that demonstrates their knowledge, skills and attitudes (KSAs) and their commitment to lifelong career development.  A special permit is required.

To reserve a seat for the Professional Experience (BUSX 460) course, students must meet the following criteria:

    BUSX 460 Registration Procedures

    1. Reserve a seat.
Students must complete a registration form and provide an unofficial transcript, with all required completed courses highlighted, with a current signed and up dated advisor form. Also you must provide your semester schedule prior to obtaining a reserved seat.  Seat reservation dates will be posted on the CBE Web site and send to CBE students via e-mail prior to registration.

    2. Acquire an approved internship.

Students must have their internships approved by the Director of Professional Experience, Laleh Malek, Stephens Hall, room 301E. Students must provide the Director of Professional Experience with an internship job description and completed internship approval form.

To acquire an internship, students can connect with employers by visiting the University's Career Center, following up on an opportunity posted in the Director of Professional Experience's CBE student e-newsletter, attending networking events and panel discussions hosted by CBE and its Center for Applied Business and Economic Research, or by gaining approval for an independently-sought internship.

Note: Internship hours must begin at the start of the BUSX 460 course. Internships from prior semesters will not be accepted. Students must complete 120 hours at the internship to receive course credit.

    3. Obtain special permit to register for the course.

Once the internship has been approved, the student will receive a special permit number.  If the internship approval form is not submitted by the deadline, the student will lose his or her reserved seat.

    4. Receive first homework assignment from the Business Excellence office.

Each student is responsible for ensuring receipt of the Business Excellence Learning Handbook. Each student is also required to complete the first assignment for the course before the first class is held. Any student that does not complete the first assignment will receive a deduction from the final grade (no exceptions will be made).

Note: Since only seven sessions for each BUSX 460 course are held, attendance to all classes are mandatory. Students are encouraged to check the class schedule for the course in advance to ensure attendance. Students that miss more than one class will receive a failing grade for the class. International students must contact the International Student and Scholar Office.
