Towson University established a Teacher Academy program at Southside Academy High School to encourage and enable high school students to become familiar with and pursue careers as teachers. The program was established with support from a federal grant to the University System of Maryland. Additional support came from Future Educators of America clubs in several of the Cherry Hill neighborhood's middle grades.

TUTORS

The TUTORS program, developed in 2005 as part of the America Reads national initiative, helps elementary school children improve their skills in reading and math. The program also offers college students teaching experience in city schools and opportunities for community service.

At Towson, the TUTORS program is coordinated by the financial aid office. Forty-eight TU students are tutoring children in reading and math this spring at four elementary schools in Cherry Hill. Towson provides bus transportation for the tutors to and from the schools, materials they can use while tutoring, and training conducted by TU professors. Towson students are assigned to a specific teacher in grades K-5, and work one-on-one or in small groups with the children. The program operates from 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., five days a week for 10 weeks during the fall and spring. TU also provides an abbreviated summer program. The children the tutors assist have been identified by the schools as being on the border between success and failure in their reading and math skill levels. Tutoring helps increase the potential for their success. Tutors are paid with Federal Work-Study funds at the rate of $10 per hour, or volunteer their time.
