The TowsonUniversityCenter
for Adults with Autism was
established in February 2008 with a generous donation
from
Therese and Douglas Erdman, in order to “empower
young adults who have ASD to keep learning and to live
life to their fullest.”
Young adults transitioning from school-based services
are faced with a number of challenges, including less
structured environments and fewer opportunities for
socialization outside of family life.
Professionals and researchers who focus on this group
are limited in number, and there are few resources
available to support these young adults as they make
this transition. The
Center for Adults with Autism
is focused on
becoming an effective, integrated, interdisciplinary
resource center that supports education for
professionals, and links academic and community
resources for young adults with ASD and their families.
Programs for Winter 2012!
Adult Language and Pragmatic Skills (ALPS)
Towson University peer mentors work under the direction of a speech language pathologist to provide opportunities to develop and practice new skills and improve communication in a fun and interactive environment. Individual goals are developed based upon the participants’ needs and interests.
Wellness FIT Program
Working under the direction of Towson faculty, this structured program promotes social skills while addressing individualized fitness goals. Held at Towson University’s Wellness Center and utilizing Towson students, participants reach personal fitness goals in a group setting.
Art Program
The focus is on creativity in this program consisting of activities with peer mentors working in the areas of drawing, painting, mask and collage making, Paper-mâché, and printing. Fine Art faculty and working artists add to the participants understanding of the medium.
Social Group
An informal group of college age adults on the autism spectrum from the surrounding community meets monthly at the university with TU students and provides opportunities for young adults to socialize in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.
Rock Wall Adventure Program
Climb to new heights with the Rock Wall Adventure Program! Learn how to scale a wall, gaining confidence with the support of Towson student mentors and trained university staff.
Women’s Group
Meeting bi-weekly, this group of women on the spectrum addresses issues that are important to them, and participates in fun, social activities with a facilitator and students from Towson.
