Advising & Student Support

Your geography and environmental planning adviser is committed to helping you
achieve your academic and professional goals.

While many of your advising sessions will be devoted to selecting choices to fulfill your degree, you should try to establish a close relationship with your adviser. Your geography and environmental planning adviser is a valuable resource who is available to chat with you about concerns you may have regarding internships, applying for jobs, or challenges you face with your classes.

Advising Is Mandatory

Students cannot register for classes without first meeting with their advisers. During or immediately after meeting with a student, the adviser will remove that student's advising hold.

Who Is My Adviser?

Each student who declares a major or minor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Planning is assigned an adviser. If you are unsure who your adviser is, consult Online Services. Once in Online Services, go to SA Self Service>Learner Services>Academics>View My Adviser. If you don't see an adviser assigned, contact the department at 410-704-2973.

How Do I Prepare For My Advising Session?

Students are expected to familiarize themselves with the Undergraduate Catalog and their degree requirements. As the Towson University Catalog states, “Failure to satisfy all published degree requirements does not provide a basis for exceptions to academic requirements or policies. It is expected that students will receive assistance from general academic and faculty advisers, but students must assume responsibility for completing published degree requirements.”

To get ready for an advising session, complete the following steps:

  • Check your Online Services account for your assigned registration date and review your advising report / academic requirements.
  • Contact your adviser and schedule an appointment prior to your assigned registration date.
  • Complete and print your advising checklist.

How Do I Register?

Make sure your adviser removed your advising hold at the end of your advising meeting. Register for classes by logging into your Online Services account on your assigned date.
