Teachers for Tomorrow

The Teachers for Tomorrow Program began in 1995 as a collaborative partnership between the Baltimore City Public School System and Towson University.

The program is designed to recruit and retain beginning, recently certified teachers for the Baltimore City Public School System. To participate in the program teachers must be eligible for admittance into a graduate program and must agree to teach five years from the start of their program in the Baltimore City Public School System.

The Teachers for Tomorrow program has four core courses: Classroom Management, Advanced Models and Processes, Issues in Education, and Teacher as Researcher. The students in this program may complete their master’s degree program in Human Resource Development/Educational Leadership Track.

Since the beginning of the program in 1995, 150 teachers have participated, and fewer than 10 percent have withdrawn for personal reasons. Surveys have been sent to graduates to assess strengths of the program and its impact on professional advancement. Strengths identified from the surveys were: cohort model, Integration of theory and practice, and keeping current in professional development strategies.

Opportunities for Professional Advancement

Teachers for Tomorrow graduates are now serving as principals, assistant principals, instructional support teachers, team leaders and mentors. Additional opportunities include participating in the exchange teacher program in Japan and the Fulbright Memorial Teacher Fund.
