Department of Educational Technology and Literacy (EDTL)

Doctorate of Education in Instructional Technology

Course Work

The Ed.D. program requires 63 graduate credits beyond the master's degree. Course work in the proposed program of study includes:

Core Courses (15 credits)

Learning Environments
Foundations of Research
Legal & Ethical Issues
Assessment in Instructional Technology
Innovation, Change & Organizational Structures

Research Methodology Courses (9 credits - select three)

Educational Statistics
Qualitative Methods
Advanced Educational Statistics
Advanced Qualitative Methods

Specialization and Elective Courses (18 Credits)
Doctoral students work with their program advisors to develop a specialization area, consisting of 18 credits. Some programs in the college of education have prepared specialization areas. These include Language and Literacy, Curriculum and Instruction, Organizational Change, Curriculum Development and others.

Doctoral Seminars and Internship (9 credits)

Proposing, Conducting, and Reporting Research I and II
Professional Internship

Dissertation Research (12 credits)
Each EdD graduate will complete a dissertation that represents a formal written report of original research. Each student will work closely with his/her dissertation advisor to plan, implement and describe the formal research project.

Comprehensive Exams
After completing all course work and prior to beginning the dissertation, each student must pass a comprehensive examination that covers the five courses in the Program Course Requirements and one specialization area. The nature of the examination is negotiated by each student with his/her program advisor and graduate committee.

Online Courses
The Ed.D. in instructional technology responds to contemporary teaching methods by having an online presence. Each course of the 51 credits of course work has significant Web-based resources. Graduate students take courses that feature discussion groups, case-based online learning, inter-institutional sharing of class resources and learning opportunities. Online learning environments and other Web-based technologies are also incorporated.
