Welcome to the Department of Secondary Education. Teaching is one of the most noble and challenging professions today. Teaching in secondary schools (middle and high schools) affords young professionals exciting opportunities to teach their subject, work closely with adolescents and share in the joy of learning, for their students and themselves. Currently there are numerous forces driving the need for secondary school teachers in the United States, including an increase in the secondary school-age population, efforts to reduce class size to support student achievement, retirements, attrition, etc. In addition to classroom teaching, secondary school teachers broaden their career choices by taking positions as principals and assistant principals, department chairpersons, team leaders, guidance counselors, reading specialists, subject area supervisors and curriculum specialists, and a wide variety of central office administrative and service positions.
