Department of Secondary Education

Master of Education in Secondary Education

Degree Requirements

To meet the College and university requirements for the M.Ed. in Secondary Education, students must complete admission requirements which include certification as a secondary public school teacher or approval by the program director. The GPA requirement for admissions is a 3.0 for full admission and a 2.75 for conditional admission, based upon the last 60 credits of total undergraduate and post-baccalaureate study. Students who are conditionally admitted are required to maintain a B average during their first 9 credits. Failure to meet this requirement results in withdrawal from the program.

The program requires 33 semester hours. Under the non-thesis plan, 18 of these are required courses, while under the thesis plan, 21 are required courses. The additional hours are comprised of electives. Elective courses may be selected from multiple departments and programs.

All requirements for the degree must be completed within the seven-year time frame. To graduate, students must maintain a 3.0, earn no more than two C grades, and successfully complete SCED 781: Integrated Professional Practice Seminar or SCED 897: Secondary Education Thesis with a grade of "B" or better.

NOTE: Graduate students enrolled in the Master of Education in Secondary Education program may transfer a maximum of 15 credits of graduate-level coursework, subject to the approval of the program director.
