Program Description The Master of Education in special education is an applied professional program designed to meet critical shortage needs of the educational community. The M.Ed.in Special Education will provide the skill development and knowledge base established by the Council for Exceptional Children's Standards for Beginning Special Educators and will meet the requirements for the Maryland State Department of Education's Special Education Generic Certification. The program emphasizes the following themes: collaboration and consultation, translation of effective instruction and management research base in to practice, and cross categorical rather than disability specific approaches. The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) is an option for those without formal training in the field of special education who wish to enter the teaching profession. Students may choose the Special Education Track in either infant/primary (birth-grade 3), elementary/middle (grades 1-8), or secondary/adult (grades 6-12+) levels. Please note that the Special Education Track is only available as a flexible program. Many participants complete the program on a part-time basis, although full-time study is encouraged. A majority of the graduate students in the special education program are full-time working professionals taking classes in the afternoon or evenings. For admission information,
