School System Partnerships - Baltimore County

Secondary Reading Certification

Towson University offers this 6 course Secondary Reading Cohort in partnership with the Baltimore County Public Schools. The purposes of this 6 course cohort are to obtain Reading Teacher certification and to enhance literacy instruction for those students for whom English is a second language.  The courses include:

Reading Theory and Practice

Teaching Reading and Writing in the Content Areas K-12

Reading Assessment

Reading Disabilities

Instruction and Assessment of English Language Learners

Second Language Literacy

All courses are offered off-campus in local BCPS schools at reduced tuition based on school system's reimbursement rate. Students will be billed $100 closed contract fee and the school system will be directly billed for the reduced tuition.  The current cohort begins in Fall 2008 and will end in Spring 2011.  The contact person at Towson University is Dr. Barbara Laster blaster@towson.edu or Dr. Steve Mogge, smogge@towson.edu, the Graduate Program Directors in the Reading Department.
