The Towson University College Democrats
Democrats of Towson is an SGA Affiliated group, a part of the
College Democrats of America, and are allied with the Progressive
Democrats of America. We are currently the largest and most active
political organization on campus. We hold weekly meetings where we
discuss our role in political life and how we can make our voices heard.
Aside from meetings, we are constantly working to organize the campus
around the Democratic cause by engaging our membership in political
Our philosophy is
that the youth vote is a crucial part of the Democratic process. As
students, we must take an active role in getting the attention of the
politicians to prove that students are a force in Maryland. The
Democrats need us to win. Hence, we strive for three goals within our
organization: 1. Political activism based on promoting a progressive
message, lobbying for issues, and canvassing for candidates, 2. Full
employment of our general membership, including those who normally can't
attend the meetings, as an effort to get students more involved and to
expand student voices in the organization and on campus, and 3.
Accountability on the executive board with clear plans, projects, and
goals that we accomplish each semester.
We are active in
bringing candidates to Towson to talk about issues, hosting debates
between the campus political organizations, getting people together for
protest, hosting social events, conducting legislative actions, and
registering people to vote.
Aside from our weekly meetings, each semester we participate in
fundraising activities (car washes, bake sales, concession stands) and
community service (such as volunteering at the Maryland Food Bank and
participating in Build-a-Playground). In the past few semesters we have
also gone to the March for Women's Lives, worked on campaigns, hosted
speaker Scott Beale on campus, held a Legislative Night, and have taken
trips to Washington D.C. to visit museums and protests, hosted a liberal
comedy show, and held movie screenings of Fahrenheit 9/11 and Gunner
Palace. We also attend State and National conventions; we went to a
joint conference in Annapolis last year with the Maryland Federation of
College Democrats and the Young Democrats of Maryland. We have also
have gone to College Democrats of America conventions in Washington D.C.
and Providence, Rhode Island.
University College Democrats are dedicated to rebuilding a Democratic
Party that has a firm influence from the college community.
