STEM Education: Increasing Female Population in Computing

Programming Logic Course for High School Girls

The CIS Department at Towson University is offering a programming logic course (COSC 175) in fall 2012 geared to high school girls.  This one semester course will be taught online by Dr. Blair Taylor. This section will include videotaped sessions, online notes and assignments, and proctored exams. Dr. Taylor will be using security injection modules from the Security Injections @ Towson project to ensure that students are introduced to important secure coding concepts.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

·         Understand and apply the software development process.

·         Analyze problems and design structured solutions

·         Understand, create, and apply simple data types and arrays.

·         Create algorithmic solutions using basic control structures (sequence, decisions, loops) and functions.

·         Compile, execute, and run simple programs (in C++)

·         Understand the importance of secure programming.

Students will receive 4 college credits (COSC175) upon successful completion.

There will be a nominal $100 registration fee from each student (which the school can pay in one check).

For further information on this course, please contact either Dr. Alfreda Dudley (adudley@towson.edu) or Dr. Blair Taylor (btaylor@towson.edu).
