Initial Assessment of Needs and Goals In your first visit, your counselor will help you address immediate problems and will collaborate with you to determine what further sources of help will be the most useful, whether they are available at the Counseling Center or elsewhere. Brief Individual and Couples Counseling Brief individual counseling can help you to increase your self-understanding, resolve problems, feel better, and learn new skills. Brief couples counseling can provide a safe atmosphere for you and a partner to examine and improve your relationship. Career Counseling Choosing a career that reflects your interests, values, and talents is an important goal for most college students, and is a part of personal counseling. We are able to assist you with career exploration in addition to suggesting that you visit the Career Center, the primary office on campus for your career development. Psychiatric Services Psychiatry consultants are available in case you might need psychiatric evaluation and medication in addition to personal counseling. Counseling groups are particularly helpful for many concerns and goals, giving members an opportunity to share experiences, solve problems and practice new skills. You might be ready to join one of our counseling groups right away as your first ongoing service, or you might consider group counseling after having had a few individual counseling sessions. Alcohol and Drug Counseling Specialized services are available if you are troubled either by your own or someone else’s abuse of alcohol or drugs. Various individual and group counseling programs are offered, including a court-approved program for those who have received a DUI citation. Referral If services are needed that are beyond the scope of what we offer, we can assist you in finding appropriate outside sources of help. With your permission, we will follow up with you to ensure a successful outcome and to make the referral process as positive and easy as possible. First Year Students www.transitionyear.org is a useful resource for first year students that may find the transition to Towson University challenging.
