Creative Services — Requesting Our Services

Design & photography services are available at no charge to all Towson University departments and groups. Projects are prioritized based on the needs of the university and by audience.

Getting Started

Before you come by the office to discuss a project, please be sure to complete a Project Request Form.

Along with the Request Form, you should provide:

  • A file of your copy (text). We cannot work with handwritten or typed copy. Please provide your text in digital format, preferably in word on in the body of an email. PLEASE NOTE that we cannot accept Publisher files.
  • A printout of your copy.
  • Any specific art needed, such as photos, logos/graphics and signatures. When bringing artwork for your project, please keep in mind the following:
    • Original digital files are best. We can use pics from digital cameras, but don't process, resize, change or re-save them before bringing them to us to use.
    • Please provide signatures on paper. Pre-scanned signature graphics are rarely usable.
    • Graphics from web pages will not work. The resolution used on the web is not adequate for print production. Clean, large printouts or high-resolution digital files work best. Faxes are not acceptable.
    • Copyright rules apply. We cannot reproduce copyrighted artwork without permission of the copyright holder.
  • A sample of the last printed version. If you are updating something that was produced previously, please bring a copy of it. Even if you are requesting sweeping changes, a copy of the last version will still be helpful.

How long will my project take?

While some projects take longer than others, here are a few general time considerations
to keep in mind:

Editing - 1-2 weeks
All copy will be edited and proofread, whether it is by a communications manager or by the university's publications staff. Your copy is proofread for grammar and spelling, as well as consistency with university style and factual information about TU.

Design - 2-4 weeks
Even if the project is very simple, it is not the only project that the designer is working on, and must often wait to be attended to. In addition to workload considerations, keep in mind that quality creative work takes time -- the more time allotted, the greater the possibility becomes for finding a more creative solution.

Approvals - 1-2 weeks
All projects go through University Marketing for approval to ensure that the tone and message of the piece is consistent with the university's overall messaging. In addition to internal approvals, it is important that the client be as thorough as possible in their own proofing.

Printing - 2 weeks
Ten working days is considered to be the standard time needed for printing, whether your publication is printed at the TU Printing Center or at an off-campus printer.
