Application Information - Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What are the actual dates of the 2013 summer internship?
A. Internships will take place between June 17th and August 16th. Each internship is 6 to 8 consecutive weeks in length. Actual start and end dates will be agreed upon by the research project mentor and the BEST Teacher-Intern.
Q. What are the typical internship work hours?
A. BEST Teacher-Interns are expected to work 40 hours per week. Actual work day start and end times will be determined by the nature of the research project and the research site/mentor’s schedule.
Q. Do I get my first choice for an internship project?
A. Applicants that advance to Tier II of the application process will be provided with a 2013 BEST Research Project Directory. Applicants will write a Research Site Preference Essay communicating their top three research site/project choices. Final teacher-project matches will be based on these essays as well as input from the research mentor and BEST Project staff.
Q. Are research projects appropriate for middle school teachers?
A. Several research projects are appropriate for middle school teachers and are in alignment with middle school STEM curricula.
Q. What is the school year time commitment?
A. During the 2013-2014 school year, teachers will participate in a Professional Learning Community. Meetings will be held on 7 Saturdays between September and March and will total approximately 35 hours. There are also outreach and monthly homework assignments that will need to be completed on a monthly basis, totaling approximately 75 hours of time from September through April.
The Tier I application is due on or before December 19, 2012.
