The Towson University Department of Dance is a center of excellence in dance education and artistry.
We provide a comprehensive program of artistic, creative, academic development through a curriculum reflecting the skills needed for Dancing for a Lifetime as demonstrated through the Towson University Department of Dance.
We encourage students to become "artist advocates," leading and challenging them with innovative ideas as they prepare for professional or collegiate careers.
The Thematic Initiative guides the intensive and rigorous education for our screened B.F.A. major candidates. Each year, the department chooses a focused theme. We bring together interested faculty, students and curriculum for a thematic focus driven by grant details, underlying questions of inquiry and artistic outcomes.
The theme allows for planning and building a synergy between "theory" and "practice" and is one of the best practices in our field. Academic theories and artistic and cultural work are produced by practitioners at the university and by members in our larger dance field.
Through the Dance Majors Performance Project (DMPP), the Towson University Dance Company and the TU Children's Dance Division, we plan to share these outcomes through regular performances of works both on campus and also at local high schools, retirement communities and other public venues in the greater North East.
