I am more than happy to tell you about my transition from high school to college. The most important thing to understand is time management. In my first two semesters I filled my schedule with as many dance opportunities as possible (dancing in other students' composition class pieces). I do not regret doing this at all. It helped me to meet a lot of the upperclassmen. However, it also didn't give me much time for other things.
I quickly came to realize that sleep is important. I learned that it is better to try to study and do homework throughout the day, as opposed to staying up all night.
The great thing about the TU Dance Department is that you can choose how much you would like to dance every week. Everyone is required to take ballet and modern, but we offer other classes as electives (Dance Company, Repertory classes, Pointe, Partnering, West-African, etc). It is really up to you as to how much you commit yourself. I would recommend not taking too much on your first semester, but enough to keep you actively involved in the department.
The most obvious difference between high school and college is the living arrangement. I remember dreading the small dorm room and the community bathrooms (I lived in Prettyman Hall). However, it was one of the best experiences of my life. It is important to establish rules with your roommate and to be as organized as possible. And, it is important to call your mom and dad throughout the week. Remember, they miss you just as much, if not more, than you miss them.
You will have a completely new appreciation for home cooking. The food on our campus is really good but if you can, you should try to stop by the "P-tux". It's one our dining locations on campus that is a little bit fresher and healthier. They have a fresh fruit and salad bar, among many other things. Other than that, it's important to remember to just have fun!
If you have any questions about anything (dance, dorm life, campus activities), please feel free to e-mail me! I would be more than happy to answer any of your questions. Congratulations on your acceptance to Towson! I look forward to seeing you next year!
