Jason Armstrong Baker is an original percussive artist who lives the dynamic relationship between mover and music, form and improvisation. Since 2003 he has been an accompanist for numerous dance programs including Towson University, Shenandoah University, UM College Park, and the Community College of Baltimore County.
As a performing artist, composer and board certified music therapist, he draws inspiration from numerous world music and healing traditions: African rhythmic harmony, Chinese 5 Elements, American Improvisation, and Yogic Breathe-work.
A drummer since 1982, Jason holds a B.A. in Music from Berklee College of Music, 1999 and a Graduate Certificate in Music Therapy from Shenandoah University. He has studied percussion in Cuba and taught jazz and world music courses at Nakhodka College of Music in Nakhodka, Russia. As a resident in the Spiritual Lifestyle Program at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, Jason immersed himself in yoga, meditation, and “Drumming From A Place Of Stillness”.
As a music therapist, Jason facilitates therapy sessions for at-risk youth at alternative schools and after-school programs in Baltimore, including sessions for young refugees at the International Rescue Committee. He also drums with veterans at Loch Raven and Perry Point Maryland VA Centers, and conducts corporate team building and staff development sessions around the Baltimore/DC region. Jason was a staff music therapist on the adolescent crisis stabilization unit at Sheppard Pratt hospital in Towson, Maryland from 2007 – 2012.
Currently Jason is performing with Fractal Cat, a Baltimore based band that emphasizes classic songwriting, a strong vocal presence, and a multilayered psychedelic sound.
