University Child Care

Meals

Due to the health problems associated with nut products, we do not serve tree or ground nut products. Popcorn presents choking hazards for young children and will therfore not be served.  Grapes, grape tomatoes, hot dogs, celery, carrots, cucumber and zucchini all present choking hazards. We ask that families sending in lunches for their children not send any foods which include nuts or popcorn.  Please also cut foods both lengthwise and cross-wise to ensure that the food is small enough to prevent choking.  In the event that a child does inadvertently arrive with peanut butter or popcorn, we will take the food away from them and offer a substitution. While you may feel a lunch is appropriate for your own child, children love to share and we ask you to keep all our students in mind when packing lunch. Thank you for understanding our concerns and supporting our efforts to ensure everyone's safety and continued good health.

Please also understand that birthdays and last day celebrations fall under the same constraints. No nuts of any type, no popcorn, no meat, and all other small foods will be cut length and width wise to prevent choking.

Parents provide lunches for their children. We will not reheat anything, so, if you choose to use a thermos, please ensure that it is 100% plastic.  No glass inserts, please.

If your child does not eat or drink certain foods, PLEASE BE SURE to advise us. You may supply an alternative food with your child's name printed clearly in dark magic marker, and leave it in the far left refrigerator, where lunches are stored. For example:  if you would like for your child to drink non-additive milk, for instance, please keep us supplied with the milk you prefer and label it with your child's name.  You must supply the food alternatives you wish your child to have.

Please note: each term there are different days when university classes are being taught in our multipurpose room, so meals on those days are eaten in individual classrooms. The sliding doors between the kitchen and the multipurpose room will also be closed. Please avoid entering the multipurpose room when putting lunches in the refrigerators on those days, so as not to interrupt the class which is being held in that space at that time. Thank you in advance for your consideration of our use of space.

Birthdays: We celebrate birthdays during our afternoon snack time ONLY. Please do not bring whistles, balloons, peanuts, popcorn or other choking hazards as mentioned at the top of the page.

You are welcome to bring a camera. Tripods are not welcome as they present a tripping hazard around young children.
