Establishing a family legacy
Joseph E. Rankin, M.D. established the Carroll Stephen & George Thomas Rankin Scholarship
for student athletes in memory of his brothers, both TU graduates and Athletic Hall of Fame members, Carroll Stephen ’28 and George Thomas ’35.
Carroll Stephen Rankin ’28
Carroll Stephen Rankin graduated from the Towson State Normal School in 1928 with a degree in elementary education. While at Towson, he played and excelled on both the basketball, baseball and tennis teams. He was president of the student council, participated in the debating club and wrote frequently for the student newspaper, covering sports and student activities. After graduation, he was an active member of the Alumni Association Board. Carroll was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 1965 and awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1967.
George Thomas Rankin, Sr. ’35
George Thomas Rankin, Sr. graduated from Maryland State Teacher’s College at Towson in 1935 with an elementary education degree. Less is known about George, but he was an active writer and athlete, playing baseball, basketball and soccer. He was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 1974.
