Chanel Hines Chanel Hines, Class of 2012
Recipient, Ruth Marder Presidential Endowment for Top Ten Scholars

Junior Business Administration major Chanel Hines is a beneficiary of the generous philanthropy of Ruth R. Marder who established a scholarship for students in Towson University’s Top 10% Program.

Why did you choose to attend Towson University?
Towson University has a very good business program.  I had also heard from several alumni that the professors were great and really look into helping their students. The diverse population at Towson University was also important to me.

What has been your favorite class so far?

My favorite class has to be Sociology 101. This class taught me a lot about people, their cultures, and how we interact with our environment. A lot of the information I learned can be applied to my everyday life and will help me be the best Human Resources Manager I can be.

What has been your best moment or greatest achievement?
Being on the Dean’s List since freshman year has been my greatest achievement.

Are you involved in any extracurricular activities?
I am member of the Lambda Beta chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority at Towson University. My sorority has helped me become a better person. Not only have I gained a sisterhood I never had before, but I have also been able to help the Baltimore community through a series of community service activities.

What are your career plans and/or aspirations?
When I took a Business Cornerstone class, I interviewed someone in the human resources field and I immediately knew I wanted to be a Human Resources Manager. I want to make all employees at my organization as happy and comfortable as possible. So many people seem so unhappy and dissatisfied at their job.  I want to change that, it just seems like my purpose. First, I would like to start off in a government agency as a Human Resources Manager and eventually pursue a Master’s degree in business.

What does this scholarship mean to you?
I will be the first in my family to graduate from college, and I just can't thank Ms. Marder enough for this opportunity.  The Marder Scholarship has allowed me to pursue my education and not worry as much about how to take care of it financially.  Just as Ms. Marder’s kindness, thoughtfulness and selfless act in giving supported students like me, I hope to do the same to help college undergraduates like myself in the future.

Sometimes college students get discouraged and I have to admit that even I have had my fair share of those moments. However, a scholarship can give that gentle push of encouragement that is needed to continue pursuing an education, because you realize that someone took the time out of their lives to help you.  I am truly grateful for the support of Ms. Marder and the Marder Scholarship.
