Art King is the Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs for Diversity and a part-time faculty member in the College of Education. He joined the staff at Towson University in 2005. Prior to that, he spent five years at George Mason University (GMU), where he served as Director of Diversity Programs & Services. Art also taught in the Freshmen Center. Before his appointment at GMU, he spent several years as Director of The Multicultural & International Student Center and adjunct instructor at Georgia Southern University (GSU). During his tenure at GSU, he developed programs and services to benefit both domestic and international students. Previously, Art was coordinator of Multicultural Programs and before that he served as marketing representative for Regional Business Systems in Barbados, his native country. He heads up the diversity cluster comprising the African American Cultural Center, Student Success Programs (CEEP & SAGE), LGBT Student Development, Latino and Asian Pacific Islander Student Development, the Women's Center, and Campus Ministries. His direct reports are the Senior Director of CSD, the Director of the Women’s Center, and his Administrative Assistant II. Other cluster unit directors report to him through the senior director. Art also serves as university liaison to the Jewish Cultural Center (Hillel). Art is a member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team (SALT) and the Student Affairs Council (SAC). Presently, he is chairperson for the Student Affairs Staff Development Committee. He sits on the Admissions Committee of the University Senate, Middle States Accreditation Steering Committee, Interfaith Campus Ministers Association (ICMA), Union Space Task Force, Religious Staff Coordinating Council (RSCC), Student Appeals Committee of the University Senate, Diversity Coordinating Council, Diversity Advancement Committee, and the Hate/Bias Response Committee. He served as a Cluster Facilitator for LeaderShape in 2006. Art spearheads Towson's diversity efforts, presenting workshops and seminars about multiculturalism, diversity, and conflict resolution both in and out of the classroom. He teaches the EDUC-203 Teaching and Learning in a Diverse Society course for education majors, and is a member of the Implementation Team for the campus-wide Reflective Process. Furthermore, Art received honor and recognition for his dedication and commitment to student development, academic excellence, community service, and diversity. In 2005, he received the Community Service Award from the Granville Academy of Northern Virginia. In 2002, the Southern Association for College Student Affairs presented him with the Bobby E. Leach Award for his significant contribution to the development of multicultural relations on campus. In 1996 and again in 2000, he received the NAACP/BSA Distinguished Faculty/Staff Award, and in 1997 he won the Georgia College Personnel Association's Best Student Learning Program Award. Art was presented in 1997 with the Outstanding Staff Development Chairperson Award from Georgia Southern University. He earned an associate degree in Mass Communication from the Barbados Community College, and a B.S. in Communication Arts and M.Ed. in Higher Education Student Development from GSU. He is currently finishing up his Ph.D. in Conflict Analysis & Resolution at the Institute of Conflict Analysis & Resolution (ICAR) at GMU. In 2006, he participated in the TU President's Leadership Institute. His professional affiliations include: the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), the American College Personnel Association (ACPA), Pi Lambda Theta International Honor & Professional Association in Education, the Washington Regional Task Force, and the American Red Cross Association. Art enjoys tennis, volleyball, track, movies, and the arts.
